January Service to America Project
January Meeting 2019
Pam Frazier, Founder of Emmaus Wellness, spoke to the Huntsville Chapter at the January meeting about health and wellness. Pam is a health coach and reminded everyone to think of health not just from the standpoint of the body, but also the mind and spirit.

December Meeting 2018
Huntsville Chapter member Ann Whitt gave a presentation in honor of Lily Flagg, Huntsville's famous dairy cow.

Huntsville Chapter Christmas Tree 2018
Late November was time again to put up the Huntsville Chapter Christmas Tree. This year's theme was in honor of the Women's Suffrage Campaign. Members used beautiful decorations to decorate the tree on the third floor of the library.
Proclamation for Native American Indian Month
In celebration of Native American Indian Month, Chris Cowley, Huntsville Chapter American Indian Chair and Terri Dean, Regent received a signed proclamation from Mayor Tommy Battle.
National Defense Luncheon 2018
Clemons High School JROTC Capt. Flatau Twelve members of Huntsville Chapter
The National Defense Luncheon was held at Huntsville Country Club and hosted by Maple Hill Chapter. Huntsville Chapter had twelve members attend and thoroughly enjoyed the presentation by Captain Marcia Flatau.
Celebration of Armistice Day 2018
In preparation for Veterans Day and the celebration of the 100th Anniversary of WWI, the four Huntsville Chapter Regents made tissue paper poppies. Unfortunately, the Huntsville Veterans' Day Parade was cancelled due to weather, but the poppies will be used for another celebration.
DAR National Day of Service Event
Service to America Chair, Sallie Timme, organized the chapter 2018 Day of Service Event. Five members went to the UMCOR warehouse in Decatur on October 16th to volunteer in the disaster relief efforts from the hurricanes.

October Meeting 2018
Sgt. Charles Hawkins (USMC Retired) presented a wonderful program about his experiences during World War II, especially while he was stationed at Pearl Harbor just after the bombing. Regent Terri Dean presented him with a plaque and gift card in honor of his service.
Constitution Week Celebrations
The SAR Color Guard The Ringing of the Bells Huntsville Chapter Attendees
Huntsville Chapter hosted the Constitution Day Celebration this year at Calvary Baptist Church. Huntsville Chapter Constitution Chair, Ann Whitt, coordinated a wonderful program with all four Huntsville Chapters participating.
State officers went to Montgomery to get the Governor's Proclamation for Constitution Week. State Historian, Terri Dean, is from Huntsville Chapter.

Women in American History Award
Dr. Martine Bates Fairbanks was the recipient of the Women in American History Award from the Huntsville Chapter. A special reception was held after the December meeting and members from other organizations attended as well as members from other DAR chapters. Dr. Fairbanks gave a very interesting program on Chris Sheets and William Yancey, both from Alabama and both heroes of the Civil War, but on different sides. Dr. Fairbanks has written three books for the Alabama Roots Series of books for middle school children in Alabama.

First Annual Chapter Birthday Celebration 2017
Members, potential members and guests gathered at Ann Whitt's house on October 15th to celebrate the chapter's 47th birthday. Homemade ice cream, cookies and goodies were served and everyone got to know each other better. Hopefully, it will get bigger and better each year.

Bicentennial Tea
On August 13th, the four Huntsville Chapters held a Bicentennial Tea celebrating 200 years of Alabama history. People came from all over the state and it was a great success.

Summer Meeting 2017
Twenty-one members and prospective members gathered for an informative meeting on Saturday, July 8th. Everyone learned about new initiatives, protocol, insignia, and how to participate even with working. Many good ideas were discussed and everyone learned new information.
Berry College Visit
Huntsville Chapter members enjoyed a day trip to visit Berry College in Rome, Georgia. Berry College is a DAR supported school and was founded by a DAR member, Martha Berry. Members received a guided tour, lunch, and met the President, Stephen Briggs. Two members are alumni - Ann Whitaker and Kay Dunn.

Easter Party at Tut Fann Veterans Home
On April 11, members of the Huntsville Chapter provided snacks for an Easter party for the veterans at Tut Fann Veterans Home.
April Meeting 2017
Curt Cearley from The Rise Raptor Project was the speaker for April. Their mission is to inspire the public to embrace principles of good stewardship, engage in scientific discovery, and be immersed in riches of history and culture, by connecting with the most powerful birds in the world.

In honor of the 100th Anniversary of the American Entry into World War I, Wilma Stone, Historian, presented a program on the Wildcat Patch for the 81st Division. It is the oldest insignia in the Army and traces its history back to World War I.
Celebrating Women Veterans
Regent Terri Dean attended a luncheon celebrating women veterans at the Alabama Veteran's Museum in Athens in March. She presented a certificate of appreciation to Paulette Risher, MG (USA Retired) for her service during the Vietnam War.
The Huntsville Chapter NSDAR has partnered with the The United States of America Vietnam War 50th Anniversary Commemoration, established by Congress, to "thank and honor veterans of the Vietnam War, including personnel who were held as prisoners of war (POW) or listed as missing in action (MIA), for their service and sacrifice on behalf of the United States and to thank and honor the families of these veterans."

Kay Anderson, member of the Huntsville Chapter, presented an enlightening program on "Women's Clothing of the Late 18th Century" at the March meeting to celebrate Women's History Month. She made her period dress and gives programs to various groups and schools throughout the year.

F.A.C.E.S. of Morgan County (Families and Children Experiencing Separation) was honored with an Excellence in Community Service award. Board President Julie Murphy accepted the award on behalf of F.A.C.E.S. (formerly Homeless Children’s Fund), established in 1951 to meet emergency medical and health needs of abused and neglected children in Morgan County. Children at risk of foster care placement and those currently in out-of-home-placement receive clothing, food, medical, financial, and counseling services.
Soroptimist International of Huntsville was honored with an Excellence in Community Service award as well. Jennifer DeMarcus accepted the award on behalf of Soroptimist, founded in 1921, which is an international women’s organization for business and professional women who work to improve the lives of women and girls in local communities and throughout the world by contributing time and financial support to community-based and international projects that benefit women and girls.
Bottle Caps for Chapman Middle School
Huntsville Chapter DAR member Bettie Moore (left) collected 12,569 bottle caps from her friends. Shown receiving delivery of the caps is Chapman Middle School Representative Jane Wood. In 2015 the chapter collected a total of 38,018 plastic caps and lids which were donated to the school. The school received money for their collection of caps.

Vietnam Veteran Recognized for Service
May 7, 2015, John “Jay” Wilson, LTC (USA Retired) presented a program on “My Vietnam War from the Air, Ground and Home.”
After graduating from Helicopter Flight School in 1971, LTC Wilson served a tour of duty in Vietnam. LTC Wilson with Certificate of
Appreciation in Recognition of Valor, Service, and Sacrifice during the Vietnam War presented on behalf of Huntsville Chapter DAR.

In April, Ranger Adams presented a program to Huntsville Chapter DAR members on Wildlife of North America with an emphasis on cranes at the refuge.

Easter Party at Tut Fann Veterans Home
Huntsville
Chapter DAR members hosted an Easter party on March 31, 2015, at the “Tut” Fann
State
Veterans Home. Members served punch and cookies, entertained with their
rendition
of
“Here Comes Peter Cottontail,” and passed out Easter candy to the veterans.
The bunny
made
a special delivery of chocolate bunnies to the three female resident veterans.

Chapter DAR hosted a Valentine’s Day Party for residents at Floyd E. ‘Tut”
Fann State Veterans
Home where punch, cookies, cupcakes,
and fruit were served. After giving out Valentines and goody bags
filled with chocolates,
members ended the party with the singing
of “God Bless America”. Following the party, members visited with
other veterans
throughout
the home. The three female veterans were presented with Valentine cards,

Huntsville Chapter Presents Awards
On February 5, 2015, the Huntsville Chapter of the Daughters of
the American Revolution hosted their annual American History Awards Luncheon at
Valley Hill Country Club.
Guests included awardees and their family members, friends, teachers, and counselors.
The chapter presented Jonathan R. Leggett with the Outstanding Teacher of American History Award. Mr. Leggett teaches United States History at Lee High School. Mr. Leggett’s philosophy of teaching American History is to present the clearest picture of the past as he possibly can, and to get students to try and see history through the eyes of the people that lived it.
Winners of the American History Essay are fifth grade student Lindsey Lee Cunningham and sixth grade student Leah Egli, both students at Madison Academy. This year’s topic was “A Child’s Journey Through Ellis Island”.
Winner of the Christopher Columbus Essay is Nicholas T. Hubbert, a twelfth grade student from Sparkman High School. This year’s topic was “Joining Christopher Columbus on His Voyage to the New World”.
Good Citizen Award winners are first place Daniel Ryan Johnston of Pope John Paul II Catholic High School, second place Amy Denny of Westminster Christian Academy, and third place Kathryn J. Packard of Columbia High School.
Junior American Citizen Awards were presented to students from Madison Academy. Winners are Dangelo Matthews for Stamp Design; Everett Brooks III for Short Story; Amanda Lynn Falkner for Photo Essay; and working together as a team McKenize Rozek, Elizabeth Taylor, and Jordan Mills for Community Service.

Ruth Hudson was honored with an Excellence in Community Service Award. Mrs. Hudson supports her community by volunteering at the Downtown Rescue Mission Thrift Store, serving as a committee member for the Madison Baptist Association, and serving as a trustee and volunteer instructor at the Hudson School of Theology at Legacy. These are only some of the ways Mrs. Hudson serves her community.
Peggy Hawkins was also honored with an Excellence in Community Service Award. Mrs. Hawkins created the Project Linus Chapter several years ago after discovering a need for blankets for neonatal intensive care and pediatric intensive care units at a local hospital. Not only has Mrs. Hawkins gathered “blanketeers" from Huntsville and Madison, but also Athens, Rogersville, Muscle Shoals and nearby communities. Recently she provided patriotic quilts to children of fallen soldiers, policemen, and firemen.

Christmas Party at Tut Fann Veterans Home
Huntsville Chapter NSDAR hosted a Christmas party for veterans at Tut Fann State Veterans Home on December 16, 2014. Members served refreshments and entertained by singing Christmas carols. Mrs. Claus and her helpers visited with residents, passing out candy and presenting them with gifts.

Birmingham Veteran's Day Parade
Huntsville Chapter NSDAR celebrated the 67th National Veterans Day in Birmingham by participating in the parade with sister ASDAR chapters. The other chapters were Cahawba, Lily of the Cahaba, Princess Sehoy, Sunset Rock, General Sumter, and Birmingham Territory. Alabama Society Children of the American Revolution also participated with the chapters. Commemorative Partner of the 50th Anniversary Vietnam War Commemoration
Davie Williams, Terri Dean, Kay Garriott, and Wilma Stone show the certificate presented by the Department of Defense for agreeing to help honor the Vietnam Veterans during the 50th Anniversary. The goal is to honor Vietnam Veterans and their families from 2015-2017 during the commemorative period.

Five members of the Huntsville Chapter attended Continental Congress in June. They attended many events and meetings. Everyone learned a great deal and had a lot of fun in the process. This picture was taken at the Alabama Tea where the Daughters served as hostesses.

Floyd E. "Tut" Fann Veterans Home Valentines Party
Serving refreshments to the Veterans
Table decorations were put out, favor bags filled with candy were passed out, and lots of fruit and goodies were eaten. The veterans also sang karaoke to old favorites. Large boxes of Valentine candy were given to the three women veterans and favor bags were taken to the ones who could not attend the party.
